Thanks Eric. I just happened to have my camera that morning. I jumped the moose in the road leading in to that yarding area and then stopped the truck and followed him in on foot. The light brown sawdust is from my work the day before. I had seen this same bull early in the morning a few days earlier here in this same yard but I was surprised to see him again.
It's mating season now so I suppose I should have been nervous about following him on foot, but a good picture is a good picture.
This pic really isn't that good compared to many moose pics I've seen. I once had a set of close-up moose pics that I took from a rowboat being rowed by a middle-aged female tourist while the moose stood maybe 75 feet away from us in 6 or 7 feet of water feeding off the bottom. That was exciting!
But I hate to inform you that there is a very good chance that this friendly bull will be on someone's dinner table by the end of this week and his head will decorate some New Jersey sportsman's wall soon after. The moose hunt in this region of Maine runs from this Monday through Saturday and the carnage is enough to significantly disturb the uninitiated. The local weighing station has become a tourist attraction though, can you believe it?
