Covid Vaccines - Long Term Effects

In order to make a claim such as the one saying that the Covid vaccines are "safe and effective" it would be necessary to know the long-term effects of those vaccines. So why is it that just recently we have discovered that they are only effective for six months? We didn't even know what the effects of the vaccines would be six months into the future?
