The Economics Conundrum (In My Head) - What Just Happened?

What just happened Tuesday at the polls? Why did Republicans fail so significantly? How did Democrats manage to convince the American public that it was because of the Republicans that it was - and still is - necessary for Democrats to refuse to fund the government, pay the military and air traffic controllers, and fund food stamps by refusing to fund a temporary continuing resolution? Why didn't Republicans have a positive message? Why was the focus instead on fighting drugs and censoring criticism of Israel?
